The Institute of Advanced Motorists and the Camping and Caravanning Club have released some tips for drivers if they are thinking of towing a caravan.

They are:

  • Do not overload: the total weight of the unit being towed should not exceed 85% of the car's kerb weight. If it is, the towing vehicle will be dangerously unstable.
  • Check the unit is secure: do this before pulling away and after a short distance.
  • Check rear lights are working: get somebody to watch the back while pumping the brakes and work the indicators.
  • Examine tyres: the car and trailer's tyres should all be the correct pressure, and if the load is exceptional, pressures should be increased in line with the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Allow space and time: earlier anticipation is the key for starting, stopping, overtaking, changing lanes and joining and leaving motorways.
  • Use mirrors frequently.
