FLEET drivers carrying bikes on the back of their company cars could be doing so illegally, an AA survey suggests.

It estimates that almost half of all motorists who attach bikes to the back or roof of their cars will do so dangerously and could be putting other road users at risk.

AA head of policy research, Dr Steve Lawson, said: 'Although bicycle-carrying motorists are getting better, there are still an awful lot of drivers out there who continue to transport bikes improperly.'

By concealing lights or number plates drivers run the risk of causing an accident and could be fined £2,500 and receive penalty points, the AA added. Its tips include using a strap-on bike carrier for the rear of the vehicle, a roof-mounted carrier or, if the bikes hang low, attaching a board with both number plate and lights.
