BENEFITS of using natural gas to power vehicles were outlined to fleet decision-makers during a major conference.

The Transport Fuel of the 21st Century event was held at the Heritage Motor Centre in Warwickshire and sponsored by the Government-funded body TransportAction PowerShift.

Guests were told that technological developments, together with recent improvements to the tax and grant regime for gas in the UK, mean 'there has never been a better time to fuel vehicles with natural gas' and that it saves them money and protects the environment. The conference heard that the benefits of using natural gas include:

  • Reduced levels of particulates (up to 99% lower than diesel), NOX (up to 80% lower than diesel) and CO (up to 90% lower than diesel).
  • CO2 emissions 10% lower than diesel.
  • Reduced noise levels.
  • The potential for 355 savings on fuel costs.
  • Duty on natural gas – more than 80% lower than on diesel – fixed in real terms.

TransportAction head of marketing Martyn Pring said: 'With the increasing number of vehicles and traffic on the road, it is vital that hauliers and logistics companies understand the benefits of using environmentally- friendly alternatives to traditional fuels. Using greener alternatives such as natural gas not only helps to protect our environment but can deliver cost benefits by saving money in the long term.'
