They also revealed the best suppliers in the business that enable fleet decision-makers to do their jobs effectively.
More than 1,300 people attended the event, held at Le Meridien Grosvenor House Hotel in London's Park Lane.
Fleet decision-makers received awards in seven categories – Fleet Risk Management Award, Fleet Environmental Award, European Fleet of the Year, UK Fleet of the Year and three fleet manager awards, for fleets of sub-100 vehicles, 101-400 vehicles and 401-plus vehicles.
Barry Illing, road fleet manager at EWS Railway, was the biggest winner of the night, taking away the Mazda-sponsored UK Fleet of the Year trophy and the Fleet Environmental Award, sponsored by BP Oil.
The judges praised his hard work and determination to aspire to best practice in keeping with company aims.
The Fleet News Awards judges said: 'EWS has clear and precise objectives related to its core values and the environment is a leading part of that commitment. Using robust key performance indicators, the fleet keeps all suppliers in step and is driven by its core values. It is the essence of a well-run fleet.'
For the second year running Gill Garrett, UK sales co-ordinator at Premiere Products, was named Fleet Manager of the Year in the sub-100 vehicles category, sponsored by Northgate plc, the first time a fleet manager has won two consecutive awards in this sector. The judges said: 'She is a shining example of best practice in the industry that some much larger fleets would do well to follow.'
Graham Hine, facilities manager at the Adult Learning Inspectorate, was named Fleet Manager of the Year in the Vauxhall-sponsored 101-400 vehicles category, for 'a fantastic example of what can be achieved with the some fresh thinking and a determination to make a difference'.

Six month search for the best
FLEET News this week revealed the best cars and service companies in fleet, following a search stretching back more than six months.
Back in October, we asked fleet decision-makers to write in to us naming the cars, manufacturers and suppliers they felt deserved a Fleet News Award.
Our postbag was bursting with the responses, which were then used to create a shortlist of more than 200 companies for judging by a panel of 12 experts.
