A SPORTY new contender in the burgeoning sector for compact multi-activity vehicles is expected to win up to 8,000 extra sales for SEAT UK next year.

To be called Altea and launched next spring, the multi sports vehicle has the potential to develop a fresh market niche and be the company's third biggest seller in Britain, believes SEAT UK director Kevin James.

He said: 'As it is based on the Salsa concept, this is a Leon-segment car that uses tall styling to create a spacious interior for family use. It will be sold alongside the Alhambra and we're confident it will create a new cross segment in the market. While this car will not offer the seating flexibility of a Vauxhall Zafira, it will have the space to appeal to a wide section of family car buyers. We're very excited about its prospects.'

Pricing is yet to be fixed, but the Altea is expected to cost between £13,000 and £15,000.
