PEUGEOT has admitted that sales of the car it launched three years ago as Europe's first volume-produced luxury model have not met initial expectations.

But it insists that more than 100,000 registrations over the period still adds up to success for the stately 607 executive saloon that was launched to compete against executive saloons from Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Peugeot UK spokesman Andrew Didlick said: 'We sold fewer than 2,000 examples in the UK last year but a total of more than 1,200 sales so far this year is encouraging and shows we are gaining ground.'

Latest revisions to the flagship model include a motorised bootlid and side as well as curtain airbag protection for rear seat passengers. However, the availability of a new six-speed manual transmission on top 2.2-litre HDi turbodiesel powered versions should help increase the car's popularity, believes Didlick.

'Across Europe, the 607 is the most widely sold saloon in the H segment, and we believe corporate customers in Britain will be impressed with the benefits in driver comfort and operating economy provided by this transmission,' he said.

Reducing the speed of the engine during motorway cruising is claimed to cut the fuel consumption of the 127mph model and provide an official combined economy figure of 42.6mpg.

All 607 models now have door mirrors that automatically fold back against the body when the engine is off and Bluetooth technology also becomes available as an option.
