FOLLOWING a strong January, there has been no slackening of demand in February, with well-attended sales and competitive bidding across the board. BCA's light van sales have had the best start to a year on record and both volume and turnover are well ahead of 2003.

There's massive buyer interest in the corporate sales programme, with conversions regularly achieving 80% to 90% figures and frequent examples of the magic 100% being reached, most recently by Royal Mail at BCA Measham.

Underlining this demand, BCA Measham Commercials achieved record sales figures in January, and is looking good to do the same in February with the addition of vehicles from Business Partner in the fortnightly sale Lex Vehicle Leasing and Lex Defence sale. The first sale converted 99% of the entry for 110% of CAP!

Blackbushe has also recorded it's strongest January LCV figures for many years. Many professional vendors are using BCA's Smart Prepared services to get their vehicles looking their very best before sale and these are the vehicles that are really attracting the buyers' attention.

It's worth remembering that the 'end-user' is a strong force in open van auctions and this sector is most likely to pay the strongest money for the best-prepared vans. The end result can see values sail past CAP Clean and keep going – good news for vendors!

With demand across the board, it is the unusual vehicles that have stood out this month. Proof that something a little bit different can really get the buyers interested came from a number of BCA sales in recent weeks.

A 2000X-registered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 4 x4 at 34,000 miles sold for £13,000, equivalent to 129% of CAP Clean, while a 2000W Citroen Berlingo 1.9 800 'Jiffy' sandwich van sold for £8,100 at 28,000 miles. A 2000X Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 313 CDi Luton at 101,000 miles realised £10,200 or 138% of CAP and a 1999V Renault Master coach conversion at 49,000 miles sold for £11,900.

A pair of electric-powered Citroen Berlingos also offered a rare opportunity for buyers when these were offered for sale at BCA Newmains.

These 1998 S-registered examples realised £1,900 at 5,000 miles and £1,500 at 17,000 miles. With a range of just 30 miles on a full charge, these will obviously fill a niche role with the new owners.

With vendors continuing to enjoy strong values and high conversion rates and buyers happy to compete hard for the best examples on offer, auction is certainly the place to be!

We have said a number of times over recent months that it has hard to recall a more active marketplace and this seems set to continue. And looking ahead, the signs are that this strong market will keep prices firm throughout the first quarter.

Adapted van sale a success for Motability

BCA Belle Vue staged another highly successful sale of specially adapted vehicles on behalf of Motability Operations earlier this month. A packed hall of buyers competed strongly for a wide selection of vehicles that had been adapted for use with wheelchair access and other modifications.
