FLEET operators have been given the chance to put the new Vauxhall Astra through its paces on the road and track in southern Spain before it goes on sale in May.

More than 300 cars were available, including the likely best selling 1.7 CDTi and 1.6-litre Twinport.

Mike Wear, manufacturer and dealer relationships director at Motability, said: 'The new Astra is a major advance on the previous model with huge improvements in styling and driving dynamics. 'Of course, it is entering a highly competitive sector of the market with the new Volkswagen Golf on sale, and the new Ford Focus to come later this year, so it promises to be a very interesting time.'

Tim Bowden, director of supplier management at Bank of Scotland Vehicle Management, said: 'The new car has a refreshing styling that breaks the mould of the previous model, and the drive was dynamic and enjoyable.'

Nigel Trotman, business relationship manager at Whitbread, said: 'It was much better than I had anticipated and I was very impressed, particularly with the new 1.7 CDTi, which was a very responsive engine.'

Fleet consultant Steve Cox said: 'I thought the styling was excellent and it had a very solid, well put-together feel.'
