IF just one in 10 drivers could be persuaded to give colleagues a lift to meetings or the office, mileage on Britain's roads would be slashed by 25 billion miles, according to Government estimates.

Increasing car occupancy by 20% would slash mileage by 47 billion miles and a 50% increase would create a 93 billion-mile drop in vehicle mileage.

The figures were revealed by Tony McNulty, Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Department for Transport, and Labour MP for Harrow East.
