Gemel electronic sensor

GEMEL'S e662T reversing sensor uses ultrasonic technology to alert drivers to obstacles up to 1.5 metres away, above or below bumper level.
The sensors are designed to fit around the rear number plate and require no drilling.
The system is automatically activated when the driver selects reverse gear and an electronic buzzer indicates the distance between the car and both stationary and moving hazards. The intermittent signals become more frequent until a constant tone denotes that the maximum safe proximity has been reached.
A dash-mounted LED is available as an optional extra.
Price: £199 including installation

Parking Mate Easy Fit PDC200

THE PDC200 comes complete with cables, connectors and instructions for installation. The sensors attach to the rear bumper using self-adhesive pads and use ultrasonic technology to detect objects. The system can detect objects up to five feet behind the vehicle and uses an audio warning with intermittent beeps to alert drivers. An LED also flashes different colours to warn drivers they are near to an object. A green LED indicates the vehicle is between 3.5 and five feet away, changing to a red LED for 1.3 to two feet away. The LED flashes continuously when a safe distance limit has been reached.

Toad Reverse Master THE Reverse Master needs to be installed by professional fitters and uses audible beeps to tell the driver how far away obstacles are. The system automatically accesses if the vehicle has a high mounted spare wheel or tow bar fitted to the rear and allows for this when judging safe distances. Reverse Master can be fitted to larger vehicles and trailers and the system is also available with an optional digital readout, which tells drivers how close and how big the obstruction is.

The pack includes an information sheet for managers with a section on the law, the extent of the problem and tips to help prevent reversing crashes. It includes a photocopiable sheet for drivers and a self-audit form. The pack also includes a poster and leaflet with advice for drivers of all types of vehicle on reversing safety. The pack is free and managers can order additional copies to distribute to drivers.
Price: Pack is free, leaflets £1 per 10

VDO Distance Control

THE VDO system attaches to the vehicle's bumper and can be matched to colour-coded bumpers. It uses ultrasonic sensors to provide audible sounds at three different distances – 150cm, 100cm and 50cm – and drivers are able to alter the volume on the unit. A visual flashing display adds to the warning. The unit is able to differentiate when a vehicle is carrying equipment such as a trailer hitch or bike carrier, allowing for the objects when judging safe distances. The VDO forward alert can also be added to the system as an option.

Sempal Spal parking sensors

THE Spal Parking Sensors will detect obstacles behind and in front of the vehicle during parking. Fleets can install the sensors, which are attached to the bumper and can be colour-coded if required. Two, three or four head sensors can be fitted to each vehicle. When the vehicle approaches an obstacle, the sensors trigger a buzzer inside the vehicle. The frequency of the sound increases the closer to an obstacle the vehicle is and a continuous notice means the optimum distance has been reached. Front sensors can be purchased as an option alongside a speed indicator which alerts drivers when they have reached a pre-set speed.
Price: Two-sensor kit £88.95
