    Fiat Multipla

UNIQUE in the compact MPV sector thanks to its two-rows-of-three seating layout, Fiat has toned down the original Multipla's outlandish looks but kept the interior's winning formula. Immensely practical as it genuinely carries six people plus luggage, it still has a few trump cards despite its engine line-up failing to match new arrivals in the sector for pace and emissions. Handles better than an MPV should and well equipped for the price.

    Peugeot 407 SW

THE second body-style in the 407 range, the SW seems to straddle the line between hatchback and estate. It isn't a proper load lugger like the Citroen C5, Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Vectra, but has stand-out styling and the rear portion cuts a dash that echoes the best sporty estates. Shares the saloon's range of petrol and Euro IV diesel engines. The forthcoming 2.7 HDi V6 should be a gem for transporting a family in swift, smooth and refined style.
