THE majority of European countries ended 2004 on a high after recording an increase in new car sales for the year. Only three countries out of the original EU15 noted a fall in registrations, latest figures reveal. However, last year's new entrants into the EU collectively saw sales fall for the full year, according to figures produced by the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA).

Total European sales were up by 1.8% to 15,337,418 units, up from 15,073,418, while European Union sales increased by 1.6% to 14,940,827 units, from 14,703,303.

A spokesman for the ACEA said: 'Cumulative figures for the year 2004 show increases in 12 countries out of the 15, ranging from +25.4% in Denmark to +0.2% in France, with only three countries posting negative results, ranging from -0.5% in the UK to -3.2% in Finland.'
