THE EUROPEAN Commission is reviewing its long-term transport policy and has asked transport companies to give their views.

Brussels is reassessing its 2001 transport white paper, which looks ahead to 2010, taking into account new factors such as the enlargement of European Union, current weak European economic growth and high oil prices.

It will also consider new policy priorities, such as improving road safety. The original paper aimed at improving ‘the quality of transport’, especially by ‘applying real costs for the user’, and managing globalisation.

The review, said Brussels, will check whether these objectives ‘can be achieved or whether adjustments are necessary’.
