MERCEDES-BENZ claims it is a ‘trendsetter among car brands’ with the unveiling of its new B-class Compact Sports Tourer.

The new model uses the sandwich floor concept used in the A-class to maximise interior space to the extent that the firm claims rear legroom nearly matches the S-class.

The B-class will sit above the A-class and below the C-class in the firm’s range. Mercedes-Benz calls it a ‘touring, family and recreational vehicle’, and can be converted from a five-seater car to a van with 2,245 litres of load space – more than even the E-class estate. Engines will range from 180 CDI to 200 turbo, and the car should go on sale in the UK in winter 2005.
