A LORRY shunted a smart car two miles down a motorway because he had no idea it was hitched to the front of his truck.

According to website ananova.com, trucker Klaus Buergermeister sailed two miles down a busy German autobahn near Leverkusen oblivious to the little plastic car stuck to his front bumper.

He only stopped, allowing the terrified driver to escape, when he was flagged down by police.

Buergermeister had joined the autobahn and not noticed the car. As he collected it, he told police he felt a slight bump but thought he had only driven over a stone in the road.

Smart driver Mr Bolga said: ‘I was driving at just under 60mph when the truck came onto the motorway and hit me.

‘I tried to drive away but couldn’t. I looked up through my sunroof and could see the driver, but he didn’t notice me.’

Police said they would take no action against the trucker.
