LATEST figures show that sales of new cars across Europe during 2005 were mixed, with 13 countries posting an increase and 10 ending the year with losses.

Among the five main markets of the EU-23, France (+2.7%), Germany (+1.6%) and Spain (+0.8%) experienced growth for the year but Italy (-1.3%) and the UK (-5%) reported losses.

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) also released figures for the month of December, that showed sales fell by 3.9% compared to December 2004. It said the drop was partly influenced by a smaller number of working days in most countries during 2005 than the previous year. But the declining sales also indicate the sluggish market conditions of the last quarter of the year, the ACEA added.
