FLEET managers should check the driving licences of all new employees, regardless of the driver's age, to see how long they have been qualified to drive.

Car leasing company Alphabet is reminding fleets that the DVLA will revoke the licence of any newly-qualified driver if they incur just six penalty points within two years of passing their test.

'It is easy to assume that anyone in their mid-twenties or older has held a driving licence for several years, but statistically it's not safe to do so,' said Richard Schooling, commercial director of Alphabet.

According to the Driving Standards Agency, 40% of people who pass their driving test are over the age of 22. A quarter of a million people between 22 and 50 years old passed their test last year.

Since 1997, newly-qualified drivers must undergo a two year probationary period. If they incur six or more penalty points during this time, their licence is revoked and they have to retake the driving test. There is no appeal against revocation.
