Mercedes-Benz had a relatively low-key presence at the show, although its new GL, being shown in Britain for the first time, is anything but subtle.

The massive SUV, which is longer than a Range Rover at more than five metres, can seat seven people in comfort thanks to its electrically-operated third row of seats and will come with a choice of 3.2-litre V6 and 4.2-litre V8 CDI diesel engines or 4.6 and 5.5-litre V8 petrols.

The 4.2-litre V8 CDI is likely to be offered in the UK only in the GL and ML SUVs, and not in the S-class. The firm believes there is not enough of a market to justify the expense of offering it in its flagship saloon. The GL will be available for delivery towards the end of the year.
