IAN Webster, Fleet services British Geological Society

How many vehicles are on your fleet and how long have you been responsible for them?

We operate 40 pool vehicles as well as dealing with spot hire for specialist vehicles, taxi bookings, one-way-hire, vehicle ferries and goods movements. I’ve been responsible for developing this role for the past three years.

What has been the most rewarding part of the job so far?

Having no email complaints on a Monday morning and consistently providing a successful staff mobility service within an organisation of more than 500 employees.

How do you tackle risk management?

Head on – our transport policies revolve around risk management. This includes a formal vehicle purchasing policy, a vehicle check sheet that must be completed before a wheel is turned and regular licence checks.

What advice would you give other fleet managers?

Think proactively, and take in as much information as possible. Join organisations like AFCO and the ICFM. Don’t assume you know what vehicle users want. Find out what they really need from their fleet service provider.

What’s your favourite holiday destination?

Center Parcs - No cars allowed.
