Telematics: which system to choose?

CYBIT has a long list of telematics products based around Fleetstar Online for larger fleets and Fleetstar AVL for small to medium busineses.

Fleetstar Online is a modular product, meaning extra modules can be added into the core system. Key features of the Fleetstar range include real-time vehicle locating and traffic information.

MASTERNAUT provides a range of solutions depending on a fleet’s needs. These include web-based vehicle tracking through Microsoft MapPoint, and M-HourTrak, a VOSA compliant system for recording and monitoring individual drivers’ hours.

A messenger system alerts fleet managers to predetermined events such as speeding, while a scheduler automatically allocates jobs to the nearest drivers.

METASYSTEM’S MetaSAT TVM system uses GSM and GPRS equipment to ensure information is exchanged between vehicle and fleet manager as often as possible.

Provides access to historical data and downloadable information on start and stop times, journey routes and vehicle speed. An accident alert feature uses such data to create a reconstruction of incidents.

MINORPLANET’S VMIgreenlight is a vehicle management information system run from a central server, with the firm providing reports on request for ease of use. Includes real-time vehicle tracking, history and performance and links in with satellite navigation.

NAVMAN’S flagship system is its new M-Nav 650, which combines vehicle tracking with satellite navigation.

It is a system the firm calls ‘accept and go’, which allows real-time messaging and routing from the fleet manager’s desktop to the customer’s doorstep.

QUARTIX offers a service that delivers vehicle logs to fleet managers by email each morning.

Features include driver timesheets, web-based live GPRS tracking and route reports, as well as text alarms should a vehicle be started out of hours or stolen. Excel reports can be produced that show mileage, petrol use, maximum speeds and shift times.

Fleet vehicle itineraries can be compared to eliminate overlaps and can be accessed over the web and sent via email as an Excel attachment.

DATATRAK Online is one of a number of products from Siemens VDO. It provides users with internet-based vehicle-tracking reports and aimed at both local and national fleets. No special software is required and reports can be accessed from any internet-enabled PC.

TOMTOM has long been a major player in satellite navigation for the general public, and it has now used that expertise to develop a business solution.

Real-time tracking and monitoring is available for everything from response times to driving/idling rations and fleet managers can benefit from two-way communication with drivers through the TomTom unit in the vehicle.

ALTHOUGH well-known for its vehicle recovery system, Tracker also has an asset management product, Tracker Reporter. It includes real-time vehicle tracking, history, travel cost reports, fleet utilisation reports and timesheet reports.
