For the first time, a European organisation has produced a report extolling the environmental benefits of leased and rented vehicles.

Leaseurope, the umbrella organisation representing the interest of Europe’s vehicle lease and rental companies, published the report – Vehicle Leasing and Rental Companies Contribution towards Emission Reductions - to allow the companies within the sector to “build knowledge and forward arguments” about the environmental advantages of using newer and therefore cleaner vehicles.

The report goes further than just highlighting the obvious benefits of utilising a newer fleet by also suggesting companies consider options such as renting large cars only when needed rather than driving them every day, and combining rental cars with other forms of transport such as rail.

It also points out that leasing and rental companies have the tools to influence the choice of vehicle and driver behavior.

These include providing information and resources needed to run a more eco-friendly fleet; supplying total cost of ownership details, which often results in fleet operators choosing cars that have smaller engines.

Other services include software tools that optimise driving planning, professional driving training, carbon offsetting schemes and monitoring tools of progress towards greener fleets.
