This may look like a Volkswagen Polo on steroids, but under the skin is Audi’s all-new A1.

Due on sale in 2009, the A1 is part of Audi’s aggressive drive for sales – it aims to be the world’s largest premium car maker by 2015.

The A1 will be offered with a range of engine and transmission versions, as well as three and five-door hatchback, and coupe and convertible models.

Expect a 1.4-litre direct injection petrol unit offering between 65 and 170bhp, plus a 1.6 TDI ranging from 75 to 130bhp.

Quattro four-wheel drive and a semi-automatic gearbox will also be offered.
