It may look like a Vauxhall Vectra with some dubious aftermarket additions, but this is a very early prototype of the next Saab 9-5.

Under the bodykit and 20-inch wheels lurks an extended version of the Epsilon platform which will under-pin the next Vectra.

Due on sale in 2009, the next 9-5 will come in saloon and estate guises and will offer both four-wheel drive and petrol/electric hybrid options.

It will spearhead a raft of new Saabs, including the 9-4X – a four-door coupe, and a small hatchback to be called 9-1.

Another possible newcomer is a two-seater sportscar called 9-2S.
