Vauxhall is the latest manufacturer to join the small SUV sector with its Korean-built Antara – a replacement for the Frontera.

It has all the ingredients for success – strong diesel engine, chunky styling and a pricetag around the £20,000 mark.

But the Antara faces tough competition thanks to launches from the likes of Citroën, Mitsubishi and Peugeot.

The benchmark car in the sector is Honda’s CR-V, a model which trades off-road ability for on-road comfort and features one of the best diesel engines on the market.

Here we compare the two entry-level diesel models.
