A European Union-funded research project has concluded that introducing hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and filling stations with hydrogen fuelling facilities could reduce the total road transport oil consumption by 40% between now and 2050.
However, the HyWays project, which carried out the research, found that substantial barriers have to be overcome before hydrogen becomes a viable alternative.
It said ways around economic, technological and institutional barriers must be found before hydrogen transport can become commonplace.
