Chancellor Alistair Darling has said that road pricing could “reduce congestion and help environmental measures”.

Therefore he is setting aside new funding to explore how national road pricing could be introduced.

Over the past decade, the government has doubled the amount spent on transport.

Despite this the Chancellor said: “We need to spend more to reduce congestion.”

While he committed to build more roads, which has already been stated by the minister for transport, he said that: “we need radical steps” to reduce congestion.

“We do need more roads but we can’t build our way out of this,” he said.

The Chancellor has also said he is funding new measures at airports to speed up time to get through immigration.
