Toyota’s new Avensis is put through its cold-weather paces ahead of its unveiling at the Tokyo Motor Show in October.

The major change for the new incarnation of Toyota’s fleet favourite will be a “soft hybrid” option that the Japanese manufacturer hopes will expand on the Avensis’s 20,000 UK sales last year.

A full Prius-style hybrid option was deemed too expensive, so expect the engine to cut out in stop-start traffic or when coasting to save fuel.

No further surprises are expected under the bonnet and don’t expect a styling revolution, though these shots suggest a more muscular, sleek look than the current car.
