A city speed league has been compiled to show the average speed of traffic in many of England’s most congested urban centres.

London was excluded from the table to highlight that it is not just the capital that has chronic transport problems.

Indeed, the table, which was compiled by the AA in conjunction with Trafficmaster, shows that at times traffic in Bristol is slower than that in London, where the average traffic speed is 16.9mph.

However, during peak periods in central London this slows to just 10mph.

  1. Bristol                     16.8
  2. Glasgow                17.3
  3. Southampton        17.8
  4. Liverpool                17.8
  5. Manchester           18.3
  6. Cambridge            18.8
  7. Birmingham          19.4
  8. Sheffield                 19.6
  9. Cardiff                     21.8
  10. Newcastle              24.0
