Volkswagen has put a new diesel engine into the Tiguan SUV, making it the most powerful variant yet.

The 2.0-litre TDI puts out 168bhp and 258lb-ft - more torque than Golf GTI.

Nevertheless, it will still return 40.4mpg on a combined cycle, and emits 185g/km of CO2.

The power is delivered through a six-speed manual gearbox to the 4MOTION four-wheel-drive system, which can put 100% of drive to any wheel, depending on the traction available.

All this means the new Tiguan can reach 62mph from standstill in 8.9 seconds, and hit a maximum speed of 125mph.

The new engine will be available in either SE or Sport trim levels.

Prices start at £22,670 for the SE, rising to £23,370 for the Sport model.
