Fleet CV: Nigel Trotman, fleet manager, Whitbread Group

Describe your fleet
We have 500 mixed badge cars – BMWs, Audis and Volkswagens – most of which are on two-year contracts, and one van.

How did you get into the fleet industry?
I was given the fleet to run following an internal reorganisation.

What advice would you give to a starter in fleet?
Get out and meet other people in the industry as much as you can, especially through organisations like ACFO. Listen and learn – we all like to help newcomers.

Have you ever had a bad day at work?
Yes, the day I had to discipline the chief executive’s chauffeur on my boss’s behalf, which was an uncomfortable experience.

How is the industry changing?
It’s becoming increasingly complex and we are affected by more and more legislation, especially concerning health and safety and environmental issues.

What would be your ideal weekend?
A weekend in Florence, staying in the old city and not having to queue for any of the galleries or museums.
