(FN50 event:) British businesses have been warned that recession is looming over the country creating some of the most challenge conditions for fleets and suppliers in decades.

Economic forecasts from the European Commission predict that growth will fall by 0.2% in each of the third and fourth quarters of this year, an even sharper slowdown than predicted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development recently, which suggested contraction at less than 0.1% per quarter. 

The prediction was made before the latest crisis of confidence in the banking industry on Monday, when American bank Lehman Brothers filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with debts of billions of pounds, which sent shockwaves through the stock markets.

The crisis is damaging business confidence and drying up credit lines for British businesses, putting massive pressure on profits for most sectors.
