Drivers are continuing to flout the law by using hand-held mobile phones, according to a recent survey commissioned by the Department for Transport.

Since 2008, it has discovered that the use of hand-held and hands free mobile phones by drivers has increased from 1.1% to 1.4% for car drivers and 2.2% to 2.6% for van and lorry drivers.

But when it took hands-free phones into account as well, it revealed that nearly twice as many (5%) van and lorry drivers were using a mobile phone compared to 2.9% of car drivers.
