Peugeot has revealed the replacement for the 407 saloon, the new 508 which will make its public debut at September's Paris Motor Show before arriving in the UK in 2011.

Inspired by the '5 by Peugeot' concept car shown in Geneva in March, the car will eventually become available in a diesel-electric hybrid promising 200bhp with CO2 emissions of 99g/km.

But all engines will come with Peugeot's forthcoming stop-start technology to help reduce CO2 emissions and cut fuel consumption.

Both saloon and SW estate versions will be shown in Paris, and Peugeot is promising high quality materials, a spacious interior and luggage area, as well as generous levels of equipment.

Four- and five-door versions will measure about 4.8 metres in length, and offer improvements in efficiency over the outgoing 407 range by up to 15%.
