Japanese cars take the top slots for reliability in a survey conducted by aftermarket warranty provider Warranty Direct.

All the vehicles included would have had cover provided by Warranty Direct after their manufacturer warranty had expired and were aged between three and 10 years old.

The top seven places are occupied by Japanese brands Honda, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Lexus, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan with Skoda, Kia and Mini rounding off the top 10.

The worst 10 performers were Land Rover, Alfa Romeo, Renault, Saab, MG, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Audi, Rover and BMW.

Many of the models included in the survey have been replaced.
