One year after speed cameras in Swindon were turned off, bereaved mother Caroline Hannah is joining forces with national charity Brake to call on the council to switch them back on.

Caroline’s seven-year-old son Tyrese was killed in March 2008 when a speeding driver lost control and mounted the pavement where Caroline and Tyrese were walking their dog. The car missed Caroline by inches but hit Tyrese before crashing into a wall. He was killed along with his pet dog Odi.

“I am disgusted with the lack of concern shown by Swindon Council for the safety of the public,” said Caroline. “I want them to know that people do care about road safety.”

Swindon’s decision to turn off its speed cameras has come to the fore following Oxfordshire’s decision to turn off its cameras.

Brake says no academic evaluation has been carried out into the effects of turning cameras off in Swindon, but many local people are expressing their concerns about the impact on the safety of local communities.
