Waste management, car spares and road transport provider, A1 Group, has announced that it will be fitting 110 of its commercial vehicles with an AI-powered Progressive Safe System (PSS) following a preliminary installation earlier in the year.

The AI dashcam from fleet management provider, Ctrack, offers users a forward-facing camera that provides footage of the road ahead of the vehicle in case of collision, with a driver-facing view that enables real-time assessment of risk levels and distractions.

Ctrack UK’s managing director, Steve Thomas, said: “With a comprehensive fleet and video telematics offering, underpinned by a powerful software platform, these flexible and use-friendly systems offer proven safety, efficiency and sustainability improvements.”

The video telematics solution will detect, alert and report on driver behaviours deemed to cause significant risk of collision, such as eating or drinking, smoking, using a mobile device, fatigue, and eyes off the road. The device also includes a tracking function that enables A1 Group to evaluate operational performance, establish ways of improving productivity, and advise customers as to a vehicle’s progress or expected arrival.

“The Ctrack AI cameras are already making a positive impact across our commercial fleet giving us greater visibility of operational performance, improving driver behaviour and helping to reduce road risk,” said Stuart Cawthorne, A1 Group's transport manager.

“We have previously installed forward-facing dashcams, but these latest devices provide an added layer of protection to our staff and other roads users by helping us combat the dangers associated with driver distraction and fatigue.”

A1 Group’s use of Ctrack’s PSS solution is a crucial step in its approach for meeting 2024’s Direct Vision Standard (DVS) regulations from Transport for London (TfL). The initiative has already seen a 40% reduction of driver distraction events since the start of the year when an initial installation took place. A1 Group has also fitted the AI dashcams into all of its London-operating vehicles that are over 12 tonnes.

"As a responsible business committed to safety, legal compliance and operational efficiency, we were looking for a reliable and forward-thinking telematics partner. We have received expert support from the Ctrack team," explained Hawthorne.

"This has enabled us to embed the technology into our existing systems and processes, so we can achieve measurable performance benefits and return of investment."
