Speedy Hire helps decarbonise the hire sector with carbon reporting tool
Speedy Hire has unveiled a new carbon reporting tool, with the aim of helping construction companies reach their decarbonisation goals faster and more efficiently.
Developed as part of Speedy Hire’s wider strategy to enable customers to achieve their sustainability goals, the new tool benchmarks the operational performance of thousands of products, providing customers with detailed emissions reporting and reduction strategies.
Matthew Pygott, head of net zero at Speedy Hire, said: “We are seeing increasing demand for carbon quantification in tenders and contract performance.
“With our carbon reporting tool, we provide customers with the insights needed to make more sustainable choices, reducing both carbon emissions and costs.”
The tool has already been adopted by leading infrastructure and construction businesses. One of the first to trial it was Amey, a key client of Speedy Hire.
Sam Taylor, environment and sustainability business partner at Amey, said: “Speedy's newly developed tool promises to give us greater visibility of our carbon emissions through plant and tool use and will help us drive behaviours to improve this.
“For example, live tracking of uptake of 'eco' products as an alternative to standard offerings, and the level of resolution of this data promises to help us review decisions made at an account and depot level and therefore drive behaviours with regards to plant and tool hire across the sector.”
ASB Delivery cuts costs with Ram Tracking
ASB Delivery Services has posted improvements in fleet efficiency in nine years thanks to a strategic partnership with Ram Tracking.
Alex Bailo, managing director of ASB Delivery Services, says that accidents had been reduced by 90% across its fleet of 28 vans, with fuel savings totalling 20% per van due to more efficient driver behaviour, courtesy of RAM’s telematics solutions.
In addition, the company is recording a 100% customer satisfaction rating, thanks to the transparency and reliability of each delivery.
A standout feature for ASB Delivery Services has been Ram Tracking’s dashcam technology.
“Since using Ram Tracking’s dashcams, we’ve seen a noticeable drop in incidents on the road,” said Bailo. “Our drivers are more aware of their behaviour behind the wheel, and having clear footage means we can quickly resolve any issues that arise.”
In addition, Ram Tracking’s driver behaviour analysis has played a crucial role in promoting safer and more economical driving habits.
By monitoring metrics like harsh braking, acceleration, and idling time, ASB Delivery Services has not only improved compliance but also slashed fuel consumption, leading to annual savings of more than £62,000.
Stuart Small, chief business development officer at Ram Tracking, said: “We’re thrilled to see the positive impact our fleet management solutions have had on ASB Delivery Services.
“It’s rewarding to know that our technology is not only helping them reduce costs and enhance customer satisfaction but also fostering safer driving and more efficient operations.
“We look forward to building on these successes and providing more value in future.”
FCC Environment takes compliance control with AssetGo
FCC Environment is using a dedicated system from the software provider AssetGo to ensure compliance and control of its fast-expanding vehicle fleet and equipment assets.
Formed in 2012 when Focsa Services (UK) and Waste Recycling Group (both part of global infrastructure, Environment services and energy group FCC Citizen Services) came together under a new brand, FCC Environment operates a diverse range of recycling, treatment, and disposal facilities across the UK.
“We operate 728 road-going vehicles across 160 sites, as well as 548 pieces of mobile plant,” said group plant manager, William Stone, “and expect to increase to around 1000.
“With a current total of 1,190 assets countrywide, we need to rely on a secure and flexible management system, not only to maintain compliance control but also to provide instant and easily manageable data to allow efficient monitoring of every asset.”
FCC Environment trialled AssetGo’s software for six months, before going live around 18 months ago.
In this time, 361,468 daily checks and safety inspections have been carried out and the online system, with its remote dashboard control, has greatly reduced admin time and been well received by managers and drivers alike.
“Our transport compliance manager has seen a 50% reduction in the time needed to carry out each annual audit; site support visit times are 20% down – owing to the ability to remotely interact with each site – and general admin is probably down by 6-7 hours per week,” said Stone.
“In terms of ROI, the system is virtually self-funding,” he added.
FSEW transforms the future of intermodal freight
FSEW to offer end-to-end freight decarbonisation solutions for clients globally with the launch of FSEW Greenflow.
This comes off the back of the firm’s achievement at the end of last year to become diesel free which has resulted in 2.4million carbon intensive ‘diesel kms’ being avoided by deploying their fleet of ultra-low emission vehicles, reducing CO² emissions by 2,400 tonnes.
FSEW Greenflow is a bespoke solution that enables clients to reduce their carbon footprint in sea, air, road and rail freight.
It delivers measurable carbon savings and uses transparent reporting with actionable emission reports.
Geoff Tomlinson, MD at FSEW, said: “GreenFlow isn’t just about moving goods, it’s about redefining how your business contributes to a sustainable future.
“Using data and insights we can demonstrate how businesses can reduce Scope 3 emissions, forming a critical part of their sustainability strategy.”
FSEW has made significant changes to its road fleet, replacing diesel with a combination of electric and 100% biomethane trucks.
Jarrolds Logistics opens new site to support strong business growth
Jarrolds Logistics, part of The APC delivery network, has announced the opening of a new 30,000 sq. ft. depot in Norwich.
Located in Avian Way, the new depot replaces the business’s previous 22,000 sq. ft. site in Long Stratton.
The larger facility increases operational capacity by more than 35%, bringing all services under one roof and enabling greater efficiency across next-day parcel delivery, warehousing and fulfilment, says Jarrolds.
The Norwich site currently employs a 30-strong local team, including 20-plus drivers and dedicated operations and customer service teams.
As demand grows, Jarrolds Logistics plans to expand the team to support new service offerings, such as warehousing and fulfilment for e-commerce clients.
Mary Wisbey, MD at Jarrolds Logistics and Jarrolds Facilities Management, said: “This move represents a significant strategic advancement; enabling us to operate more efficiently, reduce mileage that minimises our environmental impact and creates local employment all while enhancing the quality of service we deliver to our clients and customers.”
Jarrolds Logistics became part of The APC network in 2023 following the acquisition of RDM Distribution, a long-standing member of the network.
Wyvern Cargo to save £25k annually with trailer brake monitoring solution
Haulage, distribution and warehousing specialist Wyvern Cargo is set to save £25,000 a year on trailer brake testing after investing in Webfleet’s truck and trailer management solution.
The company has equipped 100 trailers with Webfleet’s Link 350 and Electronic Braking Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS) technology.
The move follows significant price increases announced by its trailer servicing provider to meet the additional costs of this month’s new DVSA trailer brake testing legislation.
“Transitioning from an annual brake test to one every 12 weeks not only increases costs, but also leads to greater potential downtime and wasted manpower, as trailers require more frequent returns to depots for traditional rolling road brake tests,” said Simon Sparrowhawk, operations director at Wyvern Cargo.
“We ran the figures to compare the new trailer maintenance costs against Webfleet and it was a total no-brainer – the Webfleet solution allows us to track all of our 90-plus trailers for the first time and save £25k at the same time.”
The EBPM system constantly tracks brake performance on the road against DVSA standards and sends any alert emails to the fleet team.
“With our daily 5am reports, we can see where all our trailers are, who is driving, when it was last loaded, current load details, and service, MOT and maintenance status, all just by clicking on the screen or typing in a trailer reference number,” Sparrowhawk explained.
Webfleet integrates with Wyvern’s Qargo transport management solution (TMS), giving them instant access to all the data they need via the same platform.
Webfleet’s specialist HGV tracking has also been installed across 71 trucks. The system automatically links trucks to relevant trailers in the map view, so the Wyvern team don’t have to use two different menus.
Tachograph data archiving is enabled via Webfleet TachoShare, which automatically downloads driver card data and vehicle unit data remotely.
Beverley Wise, regional director at Webfleet for the UK and Ireland, said: “This collaboration underscores our commitment to pioneering trailer management solutions and setting new industry standards in operational efficiency.”
Logistics UK brings accuracy to CO2 emissions data
Logistics UK is launching a new service to ensure its members have access to accurate CO2 emissions data.
Emissions Reporting for Transport is available to all Logistics UK members and is designed to support their journey to net zero and regulatory compliance, while meeting their customers’ sustainability requirements.
As more businesses begin reporting their indirect Scope 3 carbon emissions, suppliers will need to be able to provide this information, and often it will be a requirement of doing business.
Currently, many smaller suppliers lack capacity or resources to be able to supply this information, but Emissions Reporting for Transport aims to make this information available in an accessible format.
To offer the new service, Logistics UK has partnered with BearingPoint, an independent management and technology consulting firm.
“Our members recognise the long-term benefits of carbon reporting and understand the need to measure CO2 emissions to provide trusted records that their decarbonisation plans are effective,” said Al Richardson, head of membership and affinities at Logistics UK.
“We are excited to partner with BearingPoint to offer this valuable service to our members and with the increasing need for accurate carbon footprint calculations, our members will benefit greatly from the detailed emissions reporting provided by BearingPoint's technology.”
HIived opens new depot and plans further UK expansion
Parcel delivery company Hived, which offers a fully electric end-to-end delivery service, has opened a new depot in west London as it scales its tech-enabled logistics network to meet growing demand and position itself for wider expansion across the UK.
The new site at Segro Park Hayes can handle up to 40,000 parcels per day to help meet the growing delivery needs of Londoners, and will initially employ 45 staff.
Murvah Iqbal, CEO and co-founder of Hived, said: “Hived was founded with a commitment to improve the parcel delivery experience by putting end consumers first with our tech-enabled platform.
“With our innovative parcel sortation system, which can intelligently flex to accommodate rapid increases in parcel volume as expected in the next year for our service, alongside heavier diversification of postcodes, this expanded site allows us to be all the more effective and efficient in delivering quality to Londoners.
“This latest expansion is also proof that our multi-site logistics model, with purpose-built technology designed for the e-commerce age, is scalable nationally.
“The next step for Hived will be to replicate the same levels of service we provide to retailers and customers across other parts of the UK.”
The opening of the depot follows a record Q1 for Hived, which has seen growing demand from major retailers including Nespresso, John Lewis, COS, Arket, and Uniqlo.
The launch of the new depot is the first of a number of planned site expansions in the UK.
Hived already operates a middle mile delivery network across the UK, delivering parcels from distribution centres of major retail partners to its depots in London, and it plans to scale its network to new cities in the UK over the next 18 months.
