Fleets will hear how Mobility as a Service (MaaS) can fit within their future decarbonisation strategy as this year's Fleet & Mobility Live.

Chris Jackson, former head of fleet partnerships at Centrica, is now working as technical director for consultancy firm WSP.

He will share his thoughts on the long term trajectory for fleets and MaaS could work in tandem with reducing reliance on personal passenger cars for travel.

The two day event is held on October 11 and 12 at the NEC, near Birmingham and tickets are free for fleet decision makers. Registration is open now.

Jackson is in a unique position having worked at one of the biggest fleets in the UK and so is well placed to offer thoughts on how a corporate MaaS solution could work in a fleet context.

MaaS trials have run in areas like Coventry, but these have been aimed at individual passengers, rather than businesses in particular.

Leaseurope recently said fleet managers must consider multi-modal transport solutions to facilitate corporate MaaS adoption.

More recent research from the Arval Mobility Observatory (AMO) revealed that companies are embracing mobility, but drivers resist giving their cars up as new mobility alternatives are failing to make a dent in the appeal of company cars.

This isn't about being anti-car

WSP already works with businesses to develop a mode shift analysis that looks at replacing diesel vehicles with electric. But what happens when this expands to look at replacing vehicles entirely with other modes of transport?

He said: “This isn’t about being anti-car but thinking about a long term trajectory where there will be fewer vehicles on the road overall.

“There will be less reliance on personal vehicles and increased use of active and shared modes for some elements of the fleet.”

Jackson will look at how fleets can start looking at this process, demonstrating some of the outputs and how typical journeys could be split.

He said: “I want to prompt a conversation about how fleets might be able to start replacing vehicle journeys with alternatives without causing a detriment to their business.

“What journeys can you replace and what are the opportunities for a different mode to reduce emissions and increase the health and wellbeing of your people?”

Jackson’s presentation is just one of the sessions within the Fleet & Mobility Theatre at Fleet & Mobility Live.

Delegates at the show will gain access to a packed schedule of 17 case studies and seminar sessions across the EV, Fleet & Mobility and Benefits Box Theatres across the two days.
