MoT test certificates will now include information about any outstanding recalls for the vehicle, using real-time data provided by manufacturers.

The changes, introduced in July, mean that drivers will be notified of any active vehicle recalls each time their vehicle passes or fails its MoT test.

Major car makers including Ford, Toyota, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and the Volkswagen Group have joined the new scheme and will provide live data directly into the DVSA's system.

Sue Robinson, chief executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) which represents car and commercial retailers across the UK, said: “The new MOT recall policy is welcomed by the NFDA and is something that we have called for inclusion in MOTs for many years. It will be a significant boost for motorists that have missed their free safety repairs due to frequent changes to registered keeper data on DVLA files, but also potential buyers of used car vehicles that would like to check a vehicle has an up-to-date safety record."

The DVSA previously provided recall data via its online MOT Status Check, using data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This system will now use the updated real-time data.

More manufacturers are expected to join the service in the coming months. SMMT data will continue to be used for vehicles from brands that aren't part of the scheme.
