CO2 reporting options

  1. Software from your leasing provider

If you have a sole supply leasing arrangement the simplest and cheapest option is to use the fleet management software provided by your leasing company for CO2 reporting, which is usually free of charge.

Some leasing companies, such as Zenith and Alphabet have developed their own fleet software.

Zenith has created a greenhouse gas emissions reporting tool, which is available free of charge to its existing customers, as part of its Pulse platform.

Real-time reporting through the tool shows greenhouse gas emissions across a whole fleet, by vehicle, by manufacturer and split out by greenhouse gas.

Reports can be viewed online and exported to use as part of a customer’s internal reporting.

Ian Hughes, commercial director at Zenith, says: “The tool has been developed in-house, forming part of our ongoing Pulse development and providing added value tools for our customers. Although the new regulations apply to several of our customers, this new reporting tool will help all our customers to have more transparency on fleet emissions and assist in making decisions and policy changes to reduce environmental impact.”

Alphabet’s Greencare software helps customers manage their fleet’s carbon footprint through analysis of detailed information on CO2 emissions, vehicle manufacturers, fuel type and engine size.

The system allows customers to compare their fleet against Alphabet’s ‘average’ and ‘best in class’ performers.

Greencare also features ‘scenario planning’. This means companies can plot how changes to their vehicles (such as adjusting manufacturer and model, engine size and fuel type) affect the fleet’s performance in terms of CO2 emissions and MPG.

Nigel Trotman, strategic fleet consultant at Alphabet, says: “Using the results fleet managers can build a realistic fleet policy and plan how to phase out certain vehicles over a set period to reduce CO2 emissions, improve MPG and therefore reduce business cost. In turn this supports users in complying with company goals and CSR requirements – an increasing requirement for many fleet managers.”

Other leasing companies white label software. For example, both Ogilvie Fleet and JCT600 use Jaama software.

ALD Automotive takes a different approach to many leasing companies, combining telematics with fleet software.

There are three levels: standard, premium and premium plus.

At the standard level customers can get basic CO2 reports free of charge, using mileage capture data from ALD’s tracking system which is fitted to all its vehicles.

At the premium and premium plus levels customers pay for a full telematics service, including driver behaviour. The premium plus level allows customers to drill down into minute detail using mapping.

The CO2 value provided at the standard level is a “crude calculation”, based on distance travelled and not necessarily the “true” CO2 value, according to Rhys Harrhy,

ProFleet2 development consultant.

ALD is set to launch Fuel Monitor – a free of charge release for premium and premium plus customers which will give them true volumes of CO2 and helps companies identify the most CO2 efficient and most fuel efficient vehicles.

At these levels customers get a fleet footprint league table.
