FORD is recalling 47,000 new-shape Fiestas for safety checks on clutch mechanisms and brake pipes.

The clutch problem came to light after some owners complained of problems changing gear. Engineers discovered that one batch of clutch master-cylinders could allow clutch fluid to by-pass a piston seal. There have been no accidents caused as a result of this, but the recall is still regarded as safety-related. The work - which is free of charge - will take about one hour.

At the same time, the dealers will carry out a number of other checks including inspection of the front brake-hose route. A dealer has found one instance where the hose was rubbing against an adjacent component.
