AWARD-winning British Gas Services fleet managers Alan Gorfin and Paul Holmes will be competing for the same post after their employer decided to create a single position of fleet supremo. The duo scooped this year's Fleet News Security Award for the spectacular progress they made in reducing the huge British Gas Services fleet's insurance claims profile with a range of measures.

Until now, they managed the 7,000-vehicle fleet jointly, with operations manager Gorfin handling the outsourced relationship with FCM and support manager Holmes taking responsibility for more strategic issues. But in a change of direction in human resources policy, British Gas Services has created a new £43,500 post above their management level.

Holmes, fleet support manager, and Gorfin, fleet operations manager, have both applied for the position, but British Gas Services is also advertising the post externally. A British Gas Services spokesman confirmed that the job was a newly created post reporting to a higher level than Gorfin and Holmes currently do. He said both their jobs would remain, reporting to the new position.
