FORD is to launch a 50-strong gas vehicle demonstration fleet to give companies, local authorities and health authorities the chance to test the 'clean and green' fuel a year ahead of selling gas-powered vehicles through its dealers. The fleet of compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas vehicles will be launched early next year and will comprise both cars and vans including 2.0-litre Mondeos and 2.0-litre Transits.

The programme is being offered through Ford's Fleet Demonstration Centre with fleets which trial a vehicle giving immediate feedback on fuel economy, driving performance, user acceptance and ease of refuelling. Ford will work with the major suppliers of both CNG and LPG, who are assisting with the development programme.

Ford's director of fleet operations Mike Wear said: 'We know that operators want more information about alternative fuel vehicles but are often reluctant to take a vehicle on to their fleet permanently. With the alternative fuel vehicles demonstration programme we are giving fleets the chance to try both CNG and LPG in a trial situation without the need to commit vehicles to their own fleet.'
