PHH Vehicle Management Services has snapped up the fleet management contract for travel giant Thomas Cook's 600-strong fleet from arch-rival Fleet Cost Management. PHH will provide driver services, accident management, the Fleetcom management information system, maintenance management services, acquisition and disposal.

Thomas Cook began outsourcing its fleet operations with FCM - number two in the UK fleet management market to PHH - four years ago and was one of the Birmingham-based company's most prestigious signings. More and more services were gradually moved over to FCM until the fleet was fully outsourced.

David John, senior purchasing manager at Thomas Cook, said that because the shift had been gradual, the company had never reviewed its situation on the basis of being a fully-outsourced operation. He said: 'We carried out quite an extensive review, looking at all the majors and a few of the smaller companies. Thomas Cook is a progressive company, always looking for new opportunities and initiatives. I was looking for an innovative supplier who could demonstrate the ability to adapt and grow with our business.'

FCM corporate sales manager Simon Haggart said: 'While we are disappointed we have not retained the business in a competitive tender we will be monitoring the situation closely and would hope to have the opportunity to pitch for it again in the not-too-distant future.'
