VOLVO bolstered its growing reputation as a maker of innovative cars at Frankfurt with the S40 and V40 T4, and the V70 XC - an estate with all-wheel-drive and a tougher off-road appearance. The T4 is powered by a 1.9-litre turbocharged engine producing 200bhp, with a designation which follows the hugely successful T5.

Volvo dealers are expecting first deliveries of the cars this month. 'The V70 XC is designed to appear more rugged and fit for an outdoor life than other V70s,' said a Volvo spokesman. 'It will withstand tougher treatment, and is ideal for people who like the open air lifestyle, who need to travel along badly-maintained roads and have plenty of interior room, but who are not prepared to compromise safety or drivability.'
