A NEW Lexus GS 300, featuring significant changes over the outgoing model including a claimed 10% fuel economy improvement, will go on sale in the UK in January next year. It is to make its public debut at next week's Frankfurt Motor Show and an appearance on the Lexus stand at the London Motor Show in October. Pricing details - currently from around £30,000-£35,000 - will be announced closer to launch.

Improvements to the existing 3.0-litre engine result in maximum power of 218bhp at 5,800 rpm, peak torque of 219 lb ft at 3,800 rpm, a top speed of 143mph and a 0-62mph time of 8.2 seconds. Improved fuel consumption is partly due to a new five-speed, electronically controlled adaptive automatic gearbox which changes its shift pattern to suit driving style and road conditions.

Lexus is also claiming class leading noise and vibration levels. Safety is boosted with the addition of sidebags and Lexus' vehicle stability control fitted as standard, along with a stiffer and stronger bodyshell, ABS and traction control. The new model features 'aero-ellipse' styling, shorter front and rear overhangs, increased interior space due to a longer wheelbase and relocated fuel tank, and boot capacity up by around 25%.
