RESEARCH by the RAC has shown that while fleet car users are familiar with the UK motorway network, their knowledge of alternative routes is limited. The RAC carried out a detailed survey of RAC members which overall showed how motorists consider alternative routes, timing and even their mode of transport provided they have travel information far enough in advance of their journey.

An RAC spokesman said fleet users were the most likely group to look at longer-term route planning even before getting behind the wheel. About 1,500 RAC members were surveyed. As well as motorway business and fleet users they were also categorised into motorway commuters, anxious motorway users - or those who find motorway driving unpleasant - and trunk road users.
