In the first 11 months of this year fleet diesel sales now total 188,846 (1997: 195,712) in a total diesel market of 329,374 (1997: 337,269). Last month's fall will ensure that 1998 sales are the lowest since 1993 when they totalled 139,775. In 1994 they rocketed to 216,246 to take a 25.4% share of the total fleet market, but this year diesel has dropped to a take a 19% share in fleet.
Last month, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures, all the leading fleet diesel manufacturers with the exception of Volkswagen - which saw sales rise 27.2% to 2,626 units - reported large falls in diesel sales. Peugeot remains the number one diesel manufacturer with sales last month of 4,423 (November 1997: 5,721) and the 306 was the best-selling fleet diesel car. Volkswagen's diesel success last month was led by the Golf which was the fifth best-selling fleet diesel car narrowly ahead of its Passat stablemate.
