Peugeot leads oil sector, but fleet diesel sales slump to five-year low

FLEET diesel sales this year will be at a five-year low dropping beneath the 200,000 mark for the first time since the explosion in 'oil-burners' took-off. Last month fleet diesel sales slumped 11.9% year-on-year to 14,094 units (November 1997: 15,996) out of a total diesel market of 22,671 - 13% down on November 1997's 26,065.

In the first 11 months of this year fleet diesel sales now total 188,846 (1997: 195,712) in a total diesel market of 329,374 (1997: 337,269). Last month's fall will ensure that 1998 sales are the lowest since 1993 when they totalled 139,775. In 1994 they rocketed to 216,246 to take a 25.4% share of the total fleet market, but this year diesel has dropped to a take a 19% share in fleet.

Last month, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures, all the leading fleet diesel manufacturers with the exception of Volkswagen - which saw sales rise 27.2% to 2,626 units - reported large falls in diesel sales. Peugeot remains the number one diesel manufacturer with sales last month of 4,423 (November 1997: 5,721) and the 306 was the best-selling fleet diesel car. Volkswagen's diesel success last month was led by the Golf which was the fifth best-selling fleet diesel car narrowly ahead of its Passat stablemate.

Top 10 best-selling fleet diesel models in November were: Peugeot 306 1,988, Vauxhall Astra 1,626, Ford Mondeo 1,381, Peugeot 406 1,206, Volkswagen Golf 1,149, Volkswagen Passat 966, Vauxhall Vectra 894, Citroen Xsara 819, Peugeot 206 742, Ford Escort 673.

Top 10 best-selling fleet diesel manufacturers in 1998 are: Peugeot 71,159, Ford 44,601, Vauxhall 38,524, Volkswagen 30,844, Rover 22,323, Citroen 21,378, Renault 17,435, Land Rover 16,786, Audi 10,863, Mercedes-Benz 8,858.Top 10 best-selling fleet diesel models in 1998 are: Peugeot 306 35,950, Peugeot 406 22,340, Ford Mondeo 19,214, Vauxhall Vectra 15,046, Ford Escort 14,589, Vauxhall Astra 14,530, Volkswagen Passat 12,950, Peugeot 106 10,597, Volkswagen Golf 10,555, Rover 400 10,211.
