FIAT is replacing its top line 2.5-litre turbodiesel with a 2.8 engine for the Ducato van range. The new direct injection unit produces greater power and torque with improved fuel consumption, but will cost £145, plus VAT, more than the old engine in the Ducato 14 and Maxi.

As well as increasing the bore and stroke to gain the extra capacity, Fiat has changed the engine block and crankshaft and re-engineered the combustion chambers and inlet ports. Power increases from 116bhp to 122bhp at 3600rpm, with torque up 29lb-ft to 210lb-ft at 1800rpm, making the new engine less strained and therefore quieter.

Prices start at £17,485, including VAT, for the Ducato 14 MWB High Roof, rising to £19,290 for the Maxi LWB High Roof.
