A NATIONAL group has been launched to co-ordinate the work of more than 60 local authorities running travel campaigns to encourage people to walk, cycle or use public transport.

The Travelwise Association brings together councils which have been running projects under the Travelwise scheme, conceived by Hertfordshire County Council back in 1993. The idea of the partnership is to co-ordinate the work of the councils, share best practices, monitor the effectiveness of Travelwise campaigns and raise the profile of the work being done.

Junior transport minister Glenda Jackson said: 'Local authorities hold the key to success in reducing car dependency. Their role is vital if people are to have genuine alternatives to the car. I believe the Travelwise Association will help deliver improved transport choices both locally and nationally.'
